• Business-Aligned APIs: APIs should be aligned with business capabilities. For this it's a good idea to have a "business capability map" or a similar model that allows non-technologists to understand what an API represents and what it can do for them.
• API Business Models: Each API should have a well-defined way how it creates business value. There are many different possible ways, and only a few of them are direct (i.e., through API monetization). Understanding an API's business model help you to better understand the role it plays for the organization, and what to focus on when you're investing in the API.
• API Marketing: APIs only create value when they are getting used. API marketing means to support API consumption. API marketing looks different for public, partner, and private APIs, but it is important for all APIs.
• Decentralization: APIs should be aligned with business meaning that different business units and teams should be able to create a publish APIs, so that capabilities can be made available and consumed throughout the organization. Always think about decentralization from the very start.
• API Landscape Diversity: APIs come in many shapes and sizes, and depending on the goals for an API product and the existing landscape, it is good to have design options. Avoid being too narrow in your API guidelines and plan so that the landscape and the guidelines can organically grow and evolve.
